Reflections on 2023 and Some of the Best Moments from this Year

As this year comes to a close, I'm filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the incredible journey of midwifery and the profound beauty of home births that I've been privileged to be a part of. It's been a year of immense dedication, challenges, and moments of pure joy in welcoming new life in the most intimate of settings.

Reflecting on the past year's statistics, I've had the honor of attending 48 births. Each one of these experiences has been a testament to the strength, resilience, and beauty of the birthing process. These statistics don't just represent numbers; they encapsulate the stories of countless families, each unique and profound in its own right. Each of these women has helped remind me of the strength they behold and reaffirmed my passion for this calling.

Amidst the numbers and figures, it's the individual narratives that resonate the most. The late-night calls, the moments of empowerment, and the shared emotions during the birthing process have been deeply impactful. Witnessing families welcome new members in the comfort of their own homes has been both humbling and inspiring. Watching families make the hard decision to change their birth plans and give birth in the hospital grieves me, but to stand by, cheer them on, and watch them show themselves as the rockstars they are is an honor that I don't have words for. Holding families that were not able to hold their babies earthside this year was heartbreaking but an honor I will never take for granted.

The beauty of home birth extends far beyond the physical space. It's about creating an environment steeped in familiarity, love, and support. Providing personalized care in this setting has been both a privilege and a responsibility—one that I hope I have embraced wholeheartedly throughout this year.

As I bid farewell to this year, I carry with me the stories of triumph, the moments of connection, and the immeasurable gratitude from families. I celebrate the victories, both big and small, knowing that each birth has left an indelible mark on the lives involved, mine in particular.

Here's to the countless hours, the unwavering dedication of women, and the babies who make it all possible. May the coming year bring more opportunities to continue this meaningful work, to touch more lives with compassion, and to celebrate the beauty of home births. These heartwarming, miraculous moments remind us of the profound miracle of life.
